JAN 11 / FEB 21CARNEVALE
the 2012 Carnival will be a carnival dedicated to the dramatization of daily life. Venezia as the European capital of theatre, has historically been the location of many theatres and forge of theatrical productions since 1600. Artists like Antonio Vivaldi or Antonio Guardi , Il Canaletto, had artistic committments in the organization of theatre productions, including performances and scenographies.
3 SUNDAY OF JULYREDENTORE
The Festa del Redentore is a festival that is particularly popular with Venetians as it combines a religious theme with a spectacular celebration that attracts thousands of visitors. On Saturday night, the inimitable setting of St. Mark's Basin hosts a phantasmagorical firework display that lights up the spires, domes and bell towers of the city with a kaleidoscope of colours and reflections. At dusk, just as they have done for centuries, numerous small boats decked out with balloons, decorations and brightly coloured lanterns, begin to flock into St. Mark's Bay and the Giudecca Canal. The boats then moor alongside each other and all the participants enjoy a sumptuous dinner of traditional Venetian specialities while they wait for the firework display that begins at 11.30pm and lasts until well past midnight.
SEPTMOSTRA DEL CINEMA
This is the main event in September: the international film festival also known as the "Mostra del Cinema". During this period it is obviously the centre of attention: newspaper articles, advertisements, provocations, gossip, rumours about which American stars have arrived; cinema lovers and ardent fans meet outside Palazzo del Cinema or the famous hotels in the hope of getting an autograph or taking a photo of their idol. Thus, the people taking part in this cultural event are nearly always more interesting thatn the actual films.
This is one of the two stories that give rise to the old tradition of San Marco's rosebud, presented by Venetians every 25th April to their lovers.
The initiative wanted to revive the Venetian tradition of rowing and has now become an authentic Venetian event: initially about 500 Venetian-owned boats took part but the number has now risen to over 1700 with more than 5000 rowers who come from all over the world.
1 SUNDAY OF SEPTREGATA STORICA
The Regata Storica is the main event in the annual "Voga alla Veneta" rowing calendar. This unique sport has been practised in the Venetian lagoon for thousands of years and today it is particularly well-known for the spectacular historical water pageant that precedes the race. Scores of typically 16th century-style boats with gondoliers in period costume carry the Doge, the Doge's wife and all the highest ranking Venetian officials up the Grand Canal in a brightly coloured parade. An unforgettable sight and a true reconstruction of the glorious past of one of most the powerful and influential Maritime Republics in the Mediterranean. The Regata Storica dates back centuries, probably as far back as the mid thirteenth century when the Serenissima needed to train the crews of its huge navy in the art of rowing.
